Hokkaido: Otaru

Otaru, about half an hour northwest of Sapporo, is quaint little city with a mixture of European and old Japanese elements. Since it’s a port city, many of the buildings around were old warehouses converted into shops or restaurants.

We spent most of our time up and down Sakaimachi Street delving into Otaru’s famed arts and crafts scene (apparently music boxes and glass). The street looked like something right out of a story book, filled with small museums cafes, eateries and tiny shops.
